What is a virtual run/walk? How does it work?
A virtual run/walk can be run or walked anytime and anywhere. Simply select your course and which day(s) you want to run or walk (outside or on a treadmill).
When do I run or walk?
We are encouraging participants to run or walk 3.1 miles any day(s) the week of October 18th and share your photos with us. Can’t run or walk the week of October 18th? No problem! Walk or run anytime between now and 10 am EST on October 25th. When you’re done, submit your time and race details using the form below. Times must be submitted by 10 am EST on Sunday, October 25th to be included in the competition for medals and awards.
Can anyone participate?
Yes! Young or old, fast or slow – we encourage participants of all ages and ability levels.
What if I am not a walker or runner?
That’s ok! You can help support our fight to end Esophageal Cancer by donating to the campaign by clicking here.
Where do the funds I raise go?
Every penny raised through the 2020 Steps to Save Lives Virtual 5K fights Esophageal Cancer. The funds you raise fuel crucial advocacy on Capitol Hill that results in many millions of dollars for research that otherwise would not be available to researchers working to end Esophageal Cancer. You will also be raising awareness about the link between heartburn and cancer – and advocacy to make that knowledge more widespread. Your fundraising brings patients and families the most reliable information about the latest research in the prevention, detection, and treatment of Esophageal Cancer. You will also be linking those affected by this devastating disease to compassionate support and working toward more and better approaches to their needs.
Is it too late to register?
You can register for the event at StepstoSaveLives.org until 2 pm Eastern time on Saturday, October 24th. Once you sign up, we will send you your swag bag with a t-shirt, participant’s medal, and other goodies we think you’ll like. You will also receive an email to customize your personal fundraising page where you can share the story of why this cause matters to you and direct your friends and family to give. From there, you can start fundraising or recruiting friends and family to join you by running or walking! Since this is a virtual event, you can reach out to people anywhere to join/donate to your team or an individual!
When is the official start of the 5K?
We start on Sunday, October 18th with a Live Virtual Opening Ceremony. Join us on ECAN’s Facebook Live! page or register to join on Zoom at Opening.StepstoSaveLives.org.
Do the fastest 5K participants win awards?
Yes! We will present awards to the men and women who have the top three overall times. We will also present gold, silver, and bronze medals to the top three men and women in each age category: 18 and younger, 19 – 29, 30 – 39, 40 – 49, 50 – 59, 60 – 69, 70 and older.

How does the 5K competition work? When and how do I submit my times?
We are operating on an Honor System. You can submit your race times any time from 2 pm on Sunday, October 18th until 10 am on Sunday, October 25th through the form you’ll find at the bottom of this page.
Do I have to submit my time?
No – you can just have fun! But if you want to compete, fill out the form below by 10 am EST on Sunday, October 25th.
Can I share photos of me taking Steps to Save Lives?
Yes! We would love to see your pictures. You can upload them using the form below.
Are there prizes for Fundraisers?
Yes! We are so grateful to everyone who raises funds to support the fight against Esophageal Cancer! For this event, we will issue special prizes for the top Individual and top Team fundraisers – including a prize donated by the Estate of Humphrey Bogart. The competition cutoff time for the top fundraiser awards for Teams and Individuals is 10 am EST on Sunday, October 25th. But everyone who fundraises has the chance to earn our thank you gifts. Take a look at all the prizes we send when you reach each fundraising milestone.
Can people continue to donate to my fundraiser after October 25th?
Yes! Fundraising pages will remain active until November 15th. Anyone who continues to raise funds after October 25th will still be sent any prize they earn by reaching fundraising milestones.

How do we know who won?
Join our Closing Ceremony at 2 pm EST on Sunday, October 25th on ECAN’s Facebook Live! or register to watch it on Zoom at Closing.StepstoSaveLives.org. We will announce all of the winners of the 5K race as well as the top fundraising awards!
